by Phyllis Avidan Louke and Patricia George

Flute 101:  Mastering the Basics is a beginning flute method that provides a comprehensive scope and sequence of skills, as well as ample practice of new concepts.  One of the cornerstones of this method is the extensive use of duets to practice and review concepts.  The curriculum of this book is based primarily on three areas of concentration:

  2. Learning to read and understand music notation
  3. Learning to play musically

Further important features of Flute 101:  Mastering the Basics are:

  • A logical sequence of skills and cohesive program for student and teacher
  • A balanced approach that addresses aural, digital, and intellectual skills
  • A variety of activities that address different learning styles
  • Warm-ups, skill practice, and enrichment, based on learning theory research
  • Many well-known public domain melodies in different styles
  • An extensive use of duets to practice concepts and promote aural skills

The Best Scale Book Ever

by Patricia George and Phyllis Avidan Louke

The Best Scale Book Ever by Patricia George and Phyllis Avidan Louke was designed to meet the musical and technical needs of flutists of every age and advancement.  The 130 page book includes:

  • Chapter 1, One Octave Whole Note Scales.  These scales, thirds and arpeggios are perfect for the  younger player, but also serve as tone color and intonation exercises for the advanced player.
  • Chapter 2, Phrasing Gestures, focuses on what to do with the notes once you have learned them.
  • Chapter 3, Embouchure Development, contains exercises for embouchure development and technical fluency in the third octave.
  • Chapter 4, Audition Scales, features all major and minor scales, thirds and arpeggios for the auditioning student.  A practice guide suggests phrasing and articulation patterns for audition success.
  • Chapter 5, Scales for a Lifetime, presents the essential materials needed to develop a fluid technique.  These include five note patterns, tone color scales, modal scales in thirds and sixths, Kuhlau Bass, pedal point arpeggios and seventh chords.  Most scales are written full range from C1 to D4 with a few higher surprises along the way.
  • Chapter 6, A Bouquet of Scales, includes two octave modal scales in 4s, 6s and 8s.  Chromatic scales are written in two and three octave versions as well as in Major seconds, Major and minor thirds, Perfect Fourths and Fifths.  Also included in this scale workout are Octatonic, Whole-tone, Blues and Major and Minor Pentatonic.
  • Practice Patterns for Groups of 8 notes and Practice Patterns for Groups of 6 notes provide an organized list of hundreds of ways to practice scales that include rhythm, articulation, phrasing and vibrato.
