Flute 101: Mastering the Basics
is a beginning flute method that provides a comprehensive scope and sequence
of skills, as well as ample practice of new concepts. One of the cornerstones
of this method is the extensive use of duets to practice and review concepts.

The Best Scale Book Ever
by Patricia George and Phyllis Avidan Louke was designed to meet the musical and
technical needs of flutists of every age and advancement. The 130 page book
includes:

Chapter 1, One Octave Whole
Note Scales. These scales, thirds and arpeggios are perfect
for the younger player, but also serve as tone color and
intonation exercises for the advanced player.

Chapter 2, Phrasing Gestures,
focuses on what to do with the notes once you have
learned them.

Chapter 3, Embouchure
Development, contains exercises for embouchure development
and technical fluency in the third octave.

Chapter 4, Audition Scales,
features all major and minor scales, thirds and arpeggios for
the auditioning student. A practice guide suggests phrasing and
articulation patterns for audition success.

Chapter 5, Scales for a
Lifetime, presents the essential materials needed to develop
a fluid technique. These include five note patterns, tone color
scales, modal scales in thirds and sixths, Kuhlau Bass, pedal
point arpeggios and seventh chords. Most scales are written
full range from C1 to D4 with a few higher surprises along the
way.

Chapter 6, A Bouquet of Scales,
includes two octave modal scales in 4s, 6s and 8s. Chromatic
scales are written in two and three octave versions as well as
in Major seconds, Major and minor thirds, Perfect Fourths and
Fifths. Also included in this scale workout are Octatonic,
Whole-tone, Blues and Major and Minor Pentatonic.

Practice Patterns for Groups of 8
notes and Practice
Patterns for Groups of 6 notes provide an organized list of
hundreds of ways to practice scales that include rhythm,
articulation, phrasing and vibrato.
Phyllis Avidan Louke, a member of ASCAP, is a flute teacher and
composer/arranger of music primarily for the flute, including ensemble and solo
works. With over 30 works published by ALRY Publications, her music has been
performed extensively both nationally and internationally. She has contributed
articles appearing in Flute Talk and The Instrumentalist magazines. Mrs. Louke,
a certified teacher in elementary and music education, earned a B.A. from the
University of California at Santa Barbara, where she studied with Burnett

Patricia George has served on the faculties
of the Eastman School of Music, Idaho State University, and Brigham Young
University – Idaho, and currently is the flute professor at the Sewanee Summer
Music Festival and the American Band College. She is a consulting editor for
Flute Talk magazine and writes the monthly column "The Teacher's Studio." Mrs.
George presents her "Flute Spa" participatory masterclasses throughout the
United States for universities and flute clubs. Mrs. George is a graduate of
the Eastman School of Music with the B.M., M.M., and Performer's Certificate in
Flute. She studied with Frances Blaisdell, Joseph Mariano, William Kincaid, and
Julius Baker.
