Information on Teaching Experience

Recital April 2008                                                                                                                   Recital February 2008

As a flutist and conductor, I currently serve as Music Director of Rose City Flute Choir, and principal flutist with Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and Oregon Symphonic Band, perform chamber music and freelance in the Portland area. As a certified teacher in elementary and music education for almost thirty years, I have had extensive experience in teaching all ages—my current flute students range from elementary school age up through retirement age.  I have maintained a private flute studio since 1992 and have adjudicated at both the local and state level in Solo Contests. In addition, I have worked extensively as a flute clinician in band programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area in both public and private schools, and am currently teaching beginning band in the Lake Oswego School District.

With my extensive teaching experience, I use a variety of approaches and teaching techniques to customize flute lessons based on learning style and skill level. I work with a student’s strengths to create a positive atmosphere to increase enjoyment of lessons. In lessons, we work on technical skills, stylistic skills, general musicianship, and expansion of musical horizons with different types of music. We strive toward success, enjoyment and excellence in music.

All students are offered the opportunity to perform in one or two recitals per year with a professional accompanist.  For school age students, this helps serve as preparation for Solo & Ensemble Festival performances.
